Kansas City held tough in two of the three games but could not pull out a win
FARGO, N.D. - Kansas City Softball (14-27, 5-9 Summit) took on North Dakota State (23-20, 7-5 Summit) in a three-game series across the past two days, dropping all three games. The Roos could not get the bats going, scoring five runs and stranding 21 base runners throughout the series. NDSU took the first game in a 2-1 decision before an 11-1 run rule in game two. Kansas City tried to rally late in the third game, but fell 5-3.
The first game of the series was a pitcher's duel with Delilah Robles holding it down in the circle for the Roos. She pitched six innings and threw 100 pitches, allowing just two runs to come across. Kansas City tallied eight hits, scoring its lone run in the fourth inning when Adelyn French singled and brought Mia Corres in to score.
Game two was controlled by the Bison, who used five-run second and fifth innings to earn the run-rule victory. The top of the lineup accounted for most of KC's production as base hits by Ella Husak, Megan Johnston and Leilani Bustamante scored KC's lone run in the third.
In the series finale, Robles took the circle again and went 5.1 innings with three strikeouts. A four-run fourth allowed NDSU to create some breathing room but the Roos did not go down easily. KC attempted to rally in the seventh as a Johnston single brought a run in and put runners on first and third with no outs. The Bison converted on a double play to quell the momentum and secure the victory.
Husak tallied four hits from the leadoff spot on the weekend, accounting for three of KC's five total runs. Bustamante went 3-of-6 from the plate and Johnston added a 4-of-9 mark in the batter's box. Robles went for 11.1 total innings pitched, striking out five total and posting an ERA of 4.32.
The Roos have a busy week ahead, taking on Missouri State tomorrow and Wichita State on Wednesday before completing Summit League play with a weekend series against South Dakota.
