The Bennett sisters combined for 27 points with 14 going to Elauni and 13 to Emani
FARGO, N.D. – Kansas City Women's Basketball jumped out to a 11-4 lead over North Dakota State in the early going but failed to carry over that momentum past the first few minutes, coming up short in a 54-77 result at the Scheels Center on Thursday evening. The Roos early shot making was spearheaded by the power duo of Emani and Elauni Bennett. Together the two sisters scored all 17 of Kansas City's first quarter points.
Em. Bennett started off on point, scoring the game's first two baskets thanks to excellent shot making in the mid-range from the Lee's Summit, Mo. native. El. Bennett kept the early offense churning, gaining strong position on the block where she drove past her defender for contested finishes at the cup. Following Kansas City's 11-4 start, the Roos were outscored by the Bison 18-6 to end the first frame.
Tierra Trotter engineered back-to-back buckets to start the second utilizing her shiftiness and craft to claw KC within three points at 19-22 less than two minutes into the period. A few minutes later, El. Bennett wiggled her way into the paint to follow-up a Trotter miss by beating a pair of Bison players to the board and sticking back the layup to cut the deficit to five. KC struggled to put the ball in the basket for the remainder of the half and were down 29-44.
With Kansas City needing a more high-scoring style of second half, the latter portion of the game proved to be the opposite as the Roos found themselves in a starved slugfest the rest of the way. The Roos only scored 14 points in the third and 11 in the fourth but were just outscored by four in each of those periods.
The Roos had three players reach double figures with El. Bennett paced the team with 14 points and eight rebounds on 7-11 shooting from the field while Em. Bennett reached 13 points to break her two game double figure scoring drought. Em. Bennett is now 19 points away from 1,000 career points. Kansas City shot the ball at a 35% clip overall, 11% under the Bison's 46% shooting mark for the game. Another key factor came on the glass as NDSU lead 39-35 in total rebounds while also outscoring the Roos 42-30 in terms of points in the paint.
Kansas City stays in the Flickertail State as the Roos will look to bounce back against North Dakota at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
