Olivia Platt scored the game-winner on a PK in the 81st minute
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Kansas City Women's Soccer (5-4) had to work a bit harder than expected, but emerged with a big road win over SEMO (0-8) this afternoon, 4-3. Leading 3-1 midway through the second half, the Roos seemed to be in control, but SEMO scored a pair of goals to equalize and KC had to search for a game-winner. It came in the form of an Olivia Platt 81st minute penalty kick, and the Roos claimed three points.
Kansas City controlled possession in the early-going, but it was the Redhawks that struck first on a Maya Domain goal in the 13th minute. The Roos continued pressuring through the remainder of the first frame, out-shooting SEMO 7-2. They finally found the equalizing goal in the 31st minute as Emilia Zolesio Fernandez Blanco took a short corner and sent a ball to Ashley Koch at the near post. Koch took a one-time ball and glanced it off the woodwork for her fifth goal of the season.
Coming out of the second half, the Roos exerted their force early and often. Kaitlyn Edwards was the second Roo to find the back of the net, approaching a deflected cross from 18 yards out and sending a right-footed shot skirting into the bottom-left corner. Just five minutes later, Kansas City scored again when Ashley Koch found Breckynn Pugh up the left side and Pugh found Delfina Zolesio Fernandez Blanco right in front of goal. Zolesio's shot hit the crossbar, but deflected back off of the SEMO keeper's arm and into the net to put the Roos ahead by two.
The Redhawks would not go down quietly, scoring in the 69th and 70th minutes to level the score. This meant the Roos had to look for their fourth goal of the day, and it came in the 81st minute. D. Zolesio drew a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick for Kansas City. Platt stepped up to the spot and buried the goal, her second penalty kick goal of the year.
Kansas City out-shot the Redhawks 16-8 on the day, placing nine of their attempts on frame. D. Zolesio and Edwards were tied for the team lead with four shots each. Hayes Fitzgerald and Anika Patton split time in goal, with Patton earning the first win of her collegiate career.
The Roos remain on the road next Sunday, taking on Northern Colorado in a 12 p.m. kickoff.
