UNC found a late equalizer, forcing KC to settle for a draw
GREELEY, Colo. - Kansas City Women's Soccer (5-4-1) took a lead into the late stages of today's game against Northern Colorado (1-6-4), but were forced to come home with a 2-2 draw in their final non-conference game of the year. Delfina Zolesio Fernandez Blanco and Olivia Platt found the back of the net for the Roos, who were out-shot 12-5 on the game.
Northern Colorado scored the opening goal in the 29th minute when the Bears' Gabby Ferrante put a shot outside the arms of a diving Audrey Brown to claim an early lead. It did not take long for Kansas City to respond, scoring just four minutes later. Olyvia Pugh sent a ball to the box, brought down by Riley Porter and quickly sent back to Zolesio. She approached the ball on the edge of the box, sending a blast into the back of the net to even the score.
Zolesio increases her team-leading goal tally to seven, scoring for the first time in four games. She leads the Summit League with an average of 0.7 goals per game.
The go-ahead goal came even quicker than the first on a head's up play by Platt. Northern Colorado was looking to build out of the back, but Platt jumped a pass and left nobody between herself and the goalkeeper. She brought the ball to the right side of the goal and slotted it past the keeper for her second-straight game with a goal.
The Roos were able to battle off multiple opportunities for the Bears in the second half, including a series of five-straight corners in the span of two minutes. It seemed that KC would be able to emerge with the win, but a late corner gave UNC the equalizer in the 86th minute.
Kansas City is back in action for the start of Summit League play next Saturday, hosting Oral Roberts for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
