DENVER, Colo. -- Kansas City Men's Basketball (3-12, 0-1) came up short in the Summit League opener, falling to Denver 74-87 on Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers opened the game scoring on the first two possessions and going up 4-0 one minute in. The Roos answered with strong baskets of their own by the team's leading scorer Karmello Branch and Preseason All-Summit First Team guard Jayson Petty. After a 9-0 Denver run, CJ Evans gave the rock to Branch whp hoisted and hit a left wing three pointer, ending the Pios run.
Denver continued to have stretches of quality shot making and stingy defense, making it tough for the Roos to get settled into the contest on both ends of the floor. Towards the end of the first half Kansas City found a nice rhythm offensively, going on a 15-6 run from 9:21-0:59 in the first half. The strong stretch of play from the Roos saw six different scorers get on the board as Kansas City went 7-14 from the field in that span while holding Denver to 1-10 from the floor. Kansas City went into halftime down a baker's dozen, 28-41 with 20 minutes to muster a comeback effort.Â
The Roos came out of halftime with a point to prove, forcing turnovers and getting out to transition to cut double digit deficit down to single digits. KC went on a 16-10 run to open the second half, with 13 of those points coming from CJ Evans and Chris Dockery. A big moment for the Roos came when Evans fed Dockery on the perimeter for a three pointer that cut the deficit down to seven at 44-51 with just over 14 minutes left in the game.
Kansas City continued to bring it on offense, scoring nearly 50 points in the second half and shooting 45% from the field while knocking down 16 free ones at the line. Despite the electric offensive performance in the second half, Kansas City was unable to limit Denver enough on the other end to see a comeback effort come to fruition.Â
Kansas City shot 44% from the field for the game, but allowed the Pioneers to shoot at a 47% clip overall. The Roos out-rebounded Denver 39-34 overall and hauled in 13 offensive rebounds to Denver's nine. The Roos saw 20 points come from the bench which led Denver by a four point margin and scored 16 points on the fast break. Kansas City only shot 19% from three point range which combined with a 69% outing at the free throw line, made a big difference in the final result not going the Roos way.
Three Roos saw double figures including Branch who totaled a team-high 18 points on 50% shooting and grabbed four rebounds. Evans finished with 17 points, eight assists and five rebounds while Dockery recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds, giving the junior forward his second double-double performance of the season.
