Kansas City was unable to capture its second-straight Summit League Championship Title
DENVER, Colo. - For the third-straight season, it was Kansas City and Denver in the Summit League Men's Soccer title game. For the second time in three years, the Pioneers were able to outlast the Roos, claiming the conference crown with a 4-2 victory this evening. Jeremy Francou gave Kansas City its offensive spark, scoring both of the Roos' goals. Following the match, Francou, Wade Muttitt and Marc Popow were all named to the All-Summit League Tournament Team.
The Pioneers jumped out right away, scoring on their first offensive opportunity of the evening. DU played a long ball over the heads of the Roos' defense and Keegan Kelly beat everyone to it and scored. The Roos controlled the pace for the rest of the first half, owning a 56% possession rate. The pressure came to fruition when Francou drew a foul in the box and converted the penalty kick to equalize. Just 16 minutes later, Denver would convert a penalty kick of its own and take a one-goal lead into the half.
Denver created separation with back-to-back goals in the second half, the first from Will King in the 64th minute and then another penalty kick from Kyle McGowan in the 67th. The Roos continued to create opportunities after falling behind and in the 74th minute, Miguel Fernandez sent a service to Francou's head for his second goal of the day. Kansas City made a season-high tying 10 substitutions on the match in search of an answer, but were unable to convert on a pair of shots in the final 15 minutes.
Kansas City sits at 11-3-5 on the season and with the 20th-best RPI in the nation, looks poised to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Roos will learn their destiny during the selection show on Monday, Nov. 17. The selection show will be streamed at ncaa.com.
