Roos Fall to Iona in High-Scoring Affair

Kansas City scored 91 points on the day, led by CJ Evans' 23-point outburst
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Men's Basketball (1-2) dropped a midday decision to Iona today, 105-91. It was a game packed with excitement as the two sides combined for 196 total points and Kansas City dropped its most points against a Division One opponent in a regulation game since Feb. 5, 2022. Kansas City was led by CJ Evans' scoring - the starting point guard finished with 23 points, five assists and six steals.
After falling behind early, Kansas City battled back behind the play of Evans, scoring 14 points in the first 12 minutes of the game. The Roos took a 31-29 lead after an and-one bucket from Evans, but Iona responded with a 12-point run to take a lead they would never surrender. The Roos would not go down easy, using a 9-2 run to draw back within three thanks to six-straight points from Jamaria Clark and a triple from Jason Petty. Kansas City hung tough for the rest of the half, entering the break with a five-point deficit.
Iona came out strong in the second half, going on an immediate 18-5 run and breaking the game open within the first six minutes. The Gaels' lead swelled to as many as 23 points late in the half, and the Roos were able to whittle it down to 12 but could not come any closer than that.Â
Evans finished the night with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting, the first 20-plus point game by a Kansas City player this season. His performance was the first 20-point, 70% shooting day by a Roo against a Division One opponent since Jayson Petty did so against South Dakota on Jan. 27, 2024. Today, Petty finished in double-digits for the third time in as many games, going for 18 points and matching Evans with three steals.
In total, the Roos tallied a season-high 11 steals today, forcing Iona into 18 total turnovers and converting them into 27 points off turnovers. The Roos scored at a high level in the paint, where they logged 54 points and shot the ball at a 69.2% clip.
The Roos begin their longest road trip of the season on Saturday at Texas, the first of four-straight road contests.
