Mason Haley's -13 topped the leaderboard by four strokes and gave Kansas City a share of the tournament title with St. Thomas
NEWTON, KAN. -- Kansas City Men's Golf came, saw and conquered at the Grier Jones Invitational, taking a share of first place with fellow Summit League foe St. Thomas. The Roos finished at -2 overall, shooting -1 on day one, +2 on day two and -3 on day three to clinch the crown. Along with the Tommies, KC was one of two teams to shoot under par for the tournament. Totals wise, the Roos ended up with 287 strokes in round one, 290 in round two and 285 in round three. The Roos were led by a pair of top 10 individual finishers with Mason Haley coming in sole first place and Harry Bent ending up in ninth place.Â
Haley was brilliant on the course once again, leading the pack with a -13 total by the end of the invitational, the best mark by four strokes. Remarkably, Haley shot over par on day one but saved his best golf for when it mattered most, going -7 for a full 18 holes on days two and three of the Grier Jones Invitational. In round two, Haley notched seven birdies with no bogeys and hit the par mark on the rest of the holes. Round three proved to be an even more impressive showing for the talented sophomore golfer as Haley put together a round that consisted of six birdies, four of which came on the first four holes, and one eagle on the 16th hole which gave Haley some breathing room at the top of the leaderboard.Â
Bent totaled a score of -4 for the tournament, going -7 on day one while closing out at +4 and -1 on days two and three to round out a top 10 placement. The Kansas State transfer recorded eight birdies on Sunday, including four in a row from holes 13-16. Bent cooled off slightly for the remainder of the Grier Jones Invitational but still notched six birdies across rounds two and three and earned par on the majority of his other holes. Bent finished strong with birdies on the 17th and 18th hole Tuesday afternoon and helped seal the Roos share of the top spot in the team standings.Â
