
Kansas City Completes Road Sweep Over Oral Roberts

Roos earn second consecutive sweep of Golden Eagles behind strong collective effort
TULSA, OKLA. – From start to finish Kansas City Volleyball (3-17, 2-5) put together their most dominant collective effort to date, sweeping Oral Roberts (2-18, 0-8) three sets to none and earning their first road victory of the season in the process. Kansas City took all three sets 25-20, 25-14 and 25-19 in the Roos first sweep of the season. The Roos swung the ball at a .226 clip, their highest mark against a Summit League opponent this year.
Kansas City and Oral Roberts began the match alternating points with the Roos getting to the 10 point mark first behind efficient attacking by their hitters offensively. The Roos kept the pressure on with continuous action on the front line in the form of kills by Ledisi Kpea and Stella Smith. ORU cut the lead down to one before the Roos sparked a 8-4 run to close out the opening set.
The Roos got out of the starting blocks in a jiff in set two, getting out to a 4-0 advantage behind some excellent middle blocking defense. While set one featured big plays on offense, set two was marked by excellent defense. The Roos stonewalled the Golden Eagles at several junctions including a sequence with three combined blocks in a row, all of which featured Kpea in the middle of the action. The Roos ballooned out to a 24-10 lead, their largest of the match and won the second set 25-14.
While the final set proved to be a tighter affair, KC closed the match out well behind several crucial kills by Emry Brown and Nyle Mathis on the outside. ORU had answers but the Roos responded and from the 11-11 mark, went on a 9-1 run to put the match away. Kansas City out-scored the Golden Eagles 44-40 in the point department while registering 30 kills as a team on a .226 hitting percentage.
The Roos shined defensively, stringing together 39 digs to out-pace ORU by four and notching nine total blocks as a team with 16 combo blocks as well. With five aces and 26 assists as a team, Kansas City put together a well rounded outing. Kpea led the Roos in kills with seven on a .500 hitting percentage.
Smith, Kpea, Kailee Deffebaugh and Ryanne Wattree all ended up over the .300 hitting % mark, the first time four Roos have all achieved that mark in the same match this season. Chloe Kaminski and Lyla Jones dished out 11 assists each while Alaina Larson paced the Roos with 16 digs.
Kansas City comes home to take on Omaha on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in the Swinney Center.
