KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Volleyball (3-18, 2-6 Summit League) delivered a competitive effort on Tuesday night inside the Swinney Center, taking a set and pushing Omaha (6-11, 3-5) in multiple tight frames before ultimately falling 3-1 (20-25, 23-25, 25-21, 20-25). The Roos posted a .223 hitting percentage as a team and played with balanced energy across the lineup.
The opening set saw the Roos come out energized, trading points with the Mavericks early. Kills from Emry Brown and Mia Weaver helped Kansas City gain momentum before Omaha's late push closed out the frame. KC's defense showed early promise with several key blocks by Ledisi Kpea and Kailee Deffebaugh, highlighting the team's improved net presence.
In the second set, Kansas City continued to challenge Omaha behind steady offensive production from Brown and Stella Smith, who each notched crucial kills to keep things tight throughout. Lyla Jones directed the offense efficiently, dishing out 20 assists, while Chloe Kaminski added 15 of her own. Jones' third assist got her to the 1,000 mark for her career, a remarkable achievement several years in the making.
The Roos had the crowd roaring late in the set after a service run by Alaina Larson tied things up at 23 before Omaha narrowly escaped with a 25-23 win. The Roos carried that energy into the third, responding with one of their sharpest sets of the season. Behind a .281 hitting clip, Kansas City controlled the tempo from start to finish, highlighted by Brown's relentless attacks and a perfectly timed ace to seal the 25-21 win. Smith added eight kills on .263 hitting, while Kpea contributed five kills and five blocks in the middle.
The fourth set mirrored much of the night's back-and-forth nature, with Kansas City once again within striking distance until Omaha's late surge closed the match. Weaver anchored the defense with a team-high 13 digs, and Larson followed closely with 11. The Roos tallied 11 total team blocks and four service aces on the night, showcasing a balanced attack and a gritty defensive identity that continues to build with each outing.
Kansas City travels to North Dakota to take on the Fighting Hawks on Thursday and then the Bison of North Dakota State on Saturday.
