Roos Take on No. 12 Missouri in Home Opener
3/5/2024 3:47:00 PM | Softball
Kansas City Softball will host the Tigers for the first time since 2012
Kansas City Notes
- The Roos enter the matchup following a losing skid in the Oklahoma State/Tulsa tournament last weekend. Kansas City will look to get back on its feet in the home opener before heading to another tournament this weekend.Â
- Lexy Smith continues to lead the Roos from the plate and set herself on a bit of a streak last weekend. Smith earned hits in four consecutive at-bats going three-for-three against Miami (OH) and notching a hit in her next plate appearance against Tulsa. In the matchup against Miami, Smith smashed her third home run of the season bringing in three runs. Of her three home runs this season, Smith averages 2.67 runs batted in.Â
- From the circle, Camryn Stickel has played a critical role for the Roos. She has faced 288 batters so far this season, three times more batters than any other Kansas City pitcher. She holds the lowest Blue and Gold ERA with a 3.28. Stickel has pitched more than 70 innings in the first 20 games notching 44 strikeouts.Â
- Kansas City has been hot from the plate this season, with two double-digit hitting streaks already earned. Briona Woods notched the longest hitting streak since that stat began being collected in Kansas City, earning a hit in 13 consecutive games. She also notched the longest reached base streak, reaching in 14 consecutive games. Abby Husak maintains the longest current reached base streak with 13.
- This will be the Roos' first game against a ranked opponent this season. In last season's meeting between Kansas City and then No. 23 Missouri, the Roos and Tigers played a full seven innings with Kansas City holding Mizzou to four runs in the first three innings.Â
Missouri Notes
- The Tigers enter the matchup hot off a four-win weekend. Missouri faced Wichita State (RV) and Nebraska last weekend notching wins over both to bring them to 17 on the season.Â
- Missouri's wins last weekend have helped them reach a season-high No. 12 in the rankings. The Tigers received votes in the preseason poll but were not ranked. Wins over No. 13 Utah and No. 5 Clemson on opening weekend led to their No. 15 ranking in week one and Missouri has continued climbing since.
- Earlier in the season, Mizzou faced South Dakota State, fellow Summit League competitors for the Roos, putting up back-to-back victories 4-3 and 7-1.Â
- This will be the first matchup in Kansas City between the Roos and the Tigers since 2012. Kansas City and Missouri faced off last season, and the season prior in Columbia with Missouri notching a 11-5 win last year and a 5-1 in 2022.Â
- Alex Honnold leads the Tigers at the plate and is one of two Missouri players currently batting a .400 or above. So far this season, Honnold is hitting .419 earning 26 hits in 62 at-bats, including two home runs.Â
