Kansas City made it on the board in both matches but could not get ahead
The Blue and Gold went into their second matchup of the day hanging tight with Tulsa (11-6) but ultimately losing 8-4. The Golden Hurricane got to an early lead, but a first-career home run from Elleana Navarro drew things even midway through the second. By the bottom of the fourth, Tulsa was able to extend its lead to three. After extending their lead, the Golden Hurricane locked down from the circle forcing the Roos to go three up, three down in the fourth and fifth innings. The Roos showed some real grit in the final innings, stopping a Tulsa scoring drive with the bases loaded to hold the Golden Hurricane to one run in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Kansas City brought in three runs with two outs, cutting the Tulsa lead in half, but their momentum was stifled when the Golden Hurricane locked down out number three to end the game.
KEY MOMENTS | MIAMI
- Top 1 / 0-3 | At the top of the lineup, Abby Husak started things on a strong note, with a single to third base. Katie Noble was then hit by a pitch, moving Husak into scoring position with just one out. Smith then smashed her third home run of the season to left field bringing in three runs for the Roos. The RedHawks struck out the next two batters to close the inning.
- Bottom 1 / 11-3| Three home runs, including a grand slam for Miami allowed them to create an eight-run lead.
- Top 2 / 11-4 | Navarro got things rolling for the Roos with a single to left field with just one out. Lauren Parker then ripped a triple to center field allowing Navarro to cross home plate and consequently cutting the lead to seven.
- Top 4 / 13-6 | Kansas City got to work with two outs already on the board. Lauren Parker started the drive with a single up the middle, Husak then knocked a single up the middle again advancing Parker to second. A single from Kadin Vire to left field allowed Parker to score and Husak to cross home plate on an error.
- Top 1 / 0-0 | Tulsa walked the first two batters and a single from Smith loaded the bases with just one out. The Golden Hurricane held the Roos scoreless by striking out the next two batters. In the bottom of the inning, Tulsa made it on the scoreboard, earning one run.
- Top 2 / 1-1 | Navarro smashed her first career home run to open the Kansas City at-bat. Her solo home run tied the game, but Kansas City could not hold on to the momentum going with a Husak single to bring in another run.
- Bottom 4 / 4-1 | The Golden Hurricane added another two runs early in the fourth, forcing the Blue and Gold to make a pitching change. Noble headed to the circle to relieve Camryn Stickel, immediately throwing a strikeout for out number three and closing the inning.
- Bottom 6 / 8-1 | Tulsa was able to load the bases with two outs. The Golden Hurricane had the potential to end the game in the sixth with another run, but Noble forced a fly out for out number three, stranding three on base and allowing the Roos another opportunity at the plate.
- Top 7 / 8-4 | Kansas City had one final push to keep themselves in the game. Husak reached second on a throwing error and Nobel was walked with just one out. Espy Daniels reached first on a fielder's choice, giving Tulsa out number two and Kansas City runners on first and third. Derika Castillo came up with a clutch double bringing in another run for KC and Amelia Fitzgerald did the same, bringing in run four. Tulsa earned out number three on a strikeout to secure the win.
- The home runs from Smith and Navarro bring Kansas City to eight home runs in 20 games. Smith's home run was her third of the season, making her first on the team in home runs. Navarro's home run marks the first of her career. Across their 52 games last season, the Roos documented 10 home runs and Ally Vonfeldt led the team with three.
- Smith went 4-for-5 at-bat today, notching four consecutive hits. She went 3-for-3 against Miami and earned hit number four in her first plate appearance against Tulsa. The three hits Smith earned against Miami tie her career-high which she earned against North Dakota State on May 10, 2023.
- Stickel pitched in four of the five games this weekend for Kansas City throwing 11 strikeouts across 15 innings. She leads the Roos from the circle with a 3.28 ERA and 44 strikeouts on the season. Stickel has nearly four times as many strikeouts as the next closest Roo pitcher.
- Kansas City had one of its highest batting averages of the season in the loss to Miami with a .375 average. The only two games with higher batting averages were wins for Kansas City; on March 24, the Roos notched a .417 average in their 13-3 victory over Houston Christian and a .405 in their 12-6 win against Prairie View A&M.
Kansas City hosts No. 13 Missouri (13-2) for its home opener at Urban Youth Academy. The Roos and the Tigers face off Wednesday at 4 p.m.
