Clunis Dashes For School Record at Bob Timmons Challenge

Kansas City sprinters shined to propel the Roos to a strong start to the indoor season
LAWRENCE - History was made for Kansas City on Saturday afternoon as Stephen Clunis set a school record with a time of 6.66 in the men's indoor 60 meter dash. Clunis' 6.66 time surpassed fellow-Roo teammate Kenechukwu Okpareke's 6.67 60 meter dash time which was the previous school record set last season.Â
The junior sprinter finished in first place in a race with over 40 competitors at the Bob Timmons Challenge. Clunis' record breaking performance was just the start of a successful season-opening meet for the Roos as Kansas City finished with 10 top five performances, five on the track and five in the field events.Â
TRACK EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
- Kansas City dominated the men's 60 meter dash, seeing five Roos crack the top 12 spots in the race. Following Clunis' top time of 6.66 was Okpareke who finished third with a time of 6.75, Tory Lanham at 6.91 which was good for seventh, Victor Sewankambo with a ninth place time of 6.95, and Arvesta Schine in 12th at 6.96. Stephen Brown ran unattached and darted for a time of 6.72 to finish in second place in the race.Â
- Jaleesa McWashington completed the women's 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.93, good for fifth place among 14 total competitors.Â
- Tonique Fleming ran a team-best 7.95 in the women's 60 meter dash, coming in 11th place overall and first among the eight Roos in the race.Â
- Morgan Binsfield hustled her way to a top five finish in the women's 600 yard race, notching a time of 1:28.42 which was also a team-best for that event.Â
FIELD EVENT HIGHLIGHTSÂ
- Kansas City put together a strong outing in the field events as well, highlighted by the men's long jump which saw three Roos showcase top 10 marks in the event. Nahshon Houston came in second place with a mark of 7.19 meters. Hunter Roos and Miguel Hernandez came in ninth and 10th place with marks of 6.42 meters and 6.41 meters respectively.Â
- McWashington continued her stellar day with a 5.64 meter long jump mark, good for third in the event. Brooke Williams came in seventh with a mark of 5.23 meters.Â
- Naomi Eyanagho came in fourth place in the women's shot put with a throw of 11.98 meters.Â
- Dontez Carr scored a men's triple jump mark of 13.03 meters which was good for sixth best in the event.Â
- Williams and Juliana Lupercio totaled top five finishes in the women's triple jump, recording jumps of 10.99 and 10.45 meters respectively.Â
