Petty on Full Display as Roos Stomp Coyotes

Jayson Petty went for a career-high 21 points, adding five rebounds and a pair of steals
KANSAS CITY - The emergence of Jayson Petty in the Swinney Center this evening helped carry Kansas City Men's Basketball (9-13, 3-4 Summit) to a dominant victory, taking down South Dakota (9-13, 2-5 Summit), 81-57. Petty entered the starting lineup and scored a career-high 21 points, shooting 8-of-11 from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point range, playing 31 minutes for the Roos.
Jamar Brown knocked down a three on KC's first possession of the night and the Roos never looked back, holding the lead for the game's entirety. Kansas City made its mark from deep, connecting on 11 threes, led by Petty's five. Defensively the Roos were able to shut down the Coyotes' long-range shooting, holding USD to 13.3% three-point shooting.
Petty became the second Roo to notch a 20-point game this season, joining Jamar Brown, who has reached that mark twice. Three other Roos reached double-digits, as Khristion Courseault dropped 17, Brown went for 14 and Cameron Faas scored 11. Babacar Diallo orchestrated the offense, dishing out five assists.

- 1H - 14:56 / 15-4 | Kansas City went on a 10-2 run early in the game to open up a double-digit lead, capped when Courseault found Faas for his first three-pointer of the night.
- 1H - 10:05 / 21-11 | Allen David Mukeba Jr. came up with a massive block on the defensive end, with Yulian Ramirez-Montero pulling down the rebound. Hurrying down to the other end, Diallo dished to Ramirez-Montero on the right wing for a triple that extended the lead back to double digits.
- 1H - 7:18 / 27-15 | Mukeba backed his man down, finishing under the rim for an easy layup. The bucket made KC's lead 12, but USD scored the next six to cut it in half.
- 1H - 0:15 / 41-25 | Courseault nailed a step-back triple, putting the cherry on top of a 12-2 run to end the half for the Roos. Kansas City played staunch defense on the other end, not letting the Coyotes put up a shot and going into the break with a 16-point lead.
- 2H - 16:34 / 49-31 | South Dakota scored back-to-back buckets to cut into Kansas City's lead early in the second half, but Brown dished outside to Petty for a triple that extended the lead back out.
- 2H - 11:26 / 56-40 | With South Dakota on a 7-2 run, Petty stepped up again, with Diallo finding him in the corner for his fourth three of the game. It sparked a seven-point run that put Kansas City ahead by 21.
- 2H - 5:09 / 69-48 | Time was running down on the shot clock as Courseault hit a step back to create separation and bury a jumper. It sparked a run that saw the Roos go ahead by 28.
- 2H - 3:22 / 76-48 | Brown drove to the baseline and kicked out to Petty, knocking down his fifth three of the day. It capped the nine-point run that gave the Roos their largest lead of the game and carried them to victory.
STATS TO NOTE
- Entering the night, Petty was 8-of-45 from three-point range, just a 17.8% shooting clip. He caught fire tonight, making 5-of-6 threes, or 83.3%.
- Petty is just the second Roo this season to reach the 20-point mark, and is the sixth player to drop a game with at least 15 points. Before tonight, his career-high was a 10-point game against Brown on Nov. 25.
- Kansas City forced the Coyotes into 14 turnovers, converting them into 18 points. The Roos lead the Summit League in forcing giveaways, averaging over 12 per game.
- The Roos have knocked down 11-or-more threes in each of the past three games, and are now 4-3 on the season when making 10-plus.
- Faas played a team-high 32:45, nearly three minutes above his season average.
