Kansas City was outhitting the Jackrabbits through six innings, but could not produce any runs
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Softball (8-40, 3-15 Summit) battled and got four no-hit innings from pitcher Katie Noble, but were unable to prevail over league-leading South Dakota State (32-15, 14-0 Summit), 10-0. The Roos were able to out-hit the Jackrabbits through six innings, but SDSU went for three extra-base hits, including two home runs, while the Roos had just one hit that went for extra bases. A seventh inning outburst by the Jackrabbit bats put the game out of reach late.
Prior to the game, Kansas City honored seniors Katelyn Garcia, Katherine Karnatz and Ally Vonfeldt for their four years of dedication to the program. Despite not playing this year, Garcia has remained with the team following a 43-start junior year in which she led the team in fielding percentage. Karnatz has made 118 career starts in 121 appearances, and was an All-American Scholar-Athlete last year. Vonfeldt is one of the most prolific batters in program history, ranking third on the all-time home runs list. She also leads Kansas City in nearly every major batting category this season.
KEY MOMENTS
- Bottom 1 / 0-1 | Despite not garnering a hit, South Dakota State was able to use a hit-by-pitch and stolen bases to score in the top of the first. Marina Karnes got the first hit of the day in the bottom of the inning, but the Roos were unable to bring her around to score.
- Bottom 3 / 0-1 | Kiki McCrea went for her first hit of the day, singling up the left field line. Vonfelt drew a walk on the next at-bat to move McCrea into scoring position, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning before the Roos could strike.
- Top 4 / 0-1 | Noble retired her eighth, ninth and 10th-straight batters to get through the end of four innings with her no-hitter still intact. The streak got to 11-straight in the fifth inning before an SDSU home run broke the game open.
- Bottom 5 / 0-2 | After the Jackrabbits added a run in the top of the inning, McCrea tried to get a two-out rally going with a triple, her second hit of the day. Vonfelt drew another walk in the next at-bat, but a strikeout ended the inning once again. SDSU added two runs in the next half-inning and ran away with the game from there.
