Kansas City Falls in Summit League Title Game to #3 Omaha

The Roos out-shot the Mavericks, but were unable to take advantage of opportunities
TULSA, Okla. - Kansas City Men's Soccer's (4-8-6, 2-3-3 Summit) season came to a close this afternoon in the Summit League title match, falling to Omaha (8-7-3, 3-3-2 Summit), 2-0. Omaha scored on a penalty kick in the 25th minute, putting the Roos on the back foot from the early-going. From there, Kansas City had its opportunities but were unable to take advantage, placing eight shots on goal on the game.
Following the contest, Robin Balters, Carson Lindsey and Mael Caisson were all named to the All-Tournament team.
KEY MOMENTS
- 8' / 0-0 | Kansas City had a pair of opportunities in the first eight minutes of the game, once on a header by Seth Kacich and the second on a shot from outside the box by Julien Le Bourdoulous. Both shots went just wide of the frame.
- 20' / 0-0 | A free kick was awarded to the Roos from 30 yards out, which Le Bourdoulous stepped up to take. He sent a shot towards the lower-right corner, and it was punched away by Omaha's Nathanael Sallah.
- 25' / 0-1 | A foul called in the box resulted in a penalty kick for the Mavericks, who converted on a shot by Theo Klein.
- 30' / 0-1 | The Roos looked to respond as Caisson found Christian Koffi at the top of the box, who turned and sent a shot right into Sallah's arms.
- 37' / 0-1 | Brice Middleton checked into the game and immediately made his presence felt, ripping a cross from deep in Omaha territory that bounced off the near upright.
- 53' / 0-1 | Coming out of the half, the Mavs had a pair of quick shots on-frame, but both were saved by Balters.
- 56' / 0-1 | Brevyn Cole made a run up the left side and sent a dangerous pass sliding across the box. It found Lindsey on the right side of the goal, who took a one-time shot that bounced off the crossbar.
- 72' / 0-1 | Le Bourdoulous sent a free kick into the box that found the head of Hector Taboada. Taboada rose up and placed the ball on target, but it was saved by Sallah.
- 74' / 0-1 | Another set piece provided a pair of opportunities for the Roos, as Lindsey centered the ball to Middleton, but his header attempt was blocked away.
- 83' / 0-1 | As time dwindled down, Jack Dean sent a ball into the box that was headed on the right side by Lindsey. Lindsey sent it the direction of Koffi, who had a chance from inside of the six-yard box, but his shot would be denied. Omaha would score again shortly after and take the championship.
STATS TO NOTE
- On the day, Kansas City out-shot Omaha, 15-12, with both teams putting eight shots on goal.
- Caisson, Taboada, Lindsey, Kacich, Le Bourdoulous and Edson Murguia all played a full 90 minutes for the Roos.
- Le Bourdoulous led the Roos with five shots, while Lindsey, Murguia and Koffi all had multiple shot attempts.
- Balters made a season-high six saves on the match.
SEASON IN REVIEW
In Head Coach Ryan Pore's fourth season at the helm, Kansas City qualified for the Summit League Championship game for the second-straight year. Kansas City was led offensively by Le Bourdoulous with three goals and 12 points, while Middleton, Taboada and Murguia each had three apiece as well. In goal, Balters led the Roos with a 1.19 goals against average. Kacich, Lindsey and Griffin Cook will all graduate following the season.
