
Volleyball Falls to South Dakota State in Five-Set Thriller

The Roos dropped each of the first two sets, but battled back to force five on Senior Day
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City Volleyball dropped an exhilarating five-set match to South Dakota State on Senior Day in this afternoon, 3-2 (25-14, 25-15, 24-26, 26-28, 15-8). After losing the first two sets, the Roos battled back to force a fifth before the Jackrabbits took the victory. Odyssey Warren tallied 19 kills and Sydney Henry added 24 assists to lead the way for Kansas City. Following the match, Kansas City honored seniors Georgia Mullins, Kennedy Schritenthal, Raina Smith, Rachel Sturdevant, Bree Thompson and Peyton Van Nest.
KEY MOMENTS
- S1 / 5-2 | Henry set up Sturdevant for a ferocious kill to extend the Roos early lead.
- S1 / 11-15 | Henry added another assist with a beautiful feed to Raina Smith for the kill.
- S2 / 8-12 | Van Nest gave one up for Kimora Whetstone who threw it down with authority to inch the Roos closer.
- S2 / 15-22 | Warren sent across a perfectly placed serve for the ace to get the Roos within seven, but South Dakota State would go on to win the next three points and take the set.
- S3 / 7-7 | Henry set up Carly Gillen, who hit a laser to even things early in set three.
- S3 / 17-19 | Sturdevant attacked for the kill and drew the Roos within two.
- S3 / 24-22 | Schritenthal sent across a clutch ace to put the Roos within a point of taking set three.
- S3 / 26-24 | After South Dakota came back to even things, the Roos won the next two points, capped off with a Smith kill to force a fourth set.

- S4 / 12-14 | Mullins rose for the kill to keep things tight in the fourth set.
- S4 / 20-21 | Whetstone and Mullins combined for a clutch block to bring it within one.
- S4 / 26-26 | A successful challenge gave Odyssey Warren a kill and kept the Roos alive in the fourth set
- S4 / 28-26 | Sturdevant capped off a 3-0 run and the Roos forced a fifth set.
- S5 / 2-1 | Leah Green gave Van Nest a lob and she slammed it to give the Roos an early edge.
- S5 / 8-14 | Warren and the Roos stayed alive with a kill, but South Dakota State would take the set on the next point.
STATS TO NOTE
- Smith had 10 kills in her final home game of her Kansas City career, putting her total for the season at 269.
- Warren's 19 kills marked her 20th match of the year in double-digits.
- After tallying just 16 kills in the first two sets combined, the Roos notched 19 kills each in the third and fourth sets.
- Schritenthal went for 20 digs, her seventh time reaching the 20-dig mark this year and the third time in the last six matches.
