Thorne led the Roos offensively with three hits, four RBIs, and two runs
Kansas City, MO – Kansas City (24-21, 8-10) dropped two clashes against Omaha (14-24, 8-9) in the first day of the series. The first game was a defensive extra-inning battle that went the Mavericks way in the twelfth inning. And the second was an offensive charged feud featuring five homeruns.
The Roos will complete their series against Omaha tomorrow, May 2nd in a senior day celebration. First pitch is scheduled for noon and the senior celebration will occur between games one and two.
Game 1 – Omaha 1, Kansas City 0 (12 inn.)
The hits were far and few between in game one of the series. Both starting pitchers threw twelve complete innings with nearly flawless defenses behind them. Mia Hoveland pitched another battle until the end, only giving up five hits and earning seven strikeouts. The lone run by the Mavericks came in the twelfth inning after an Omaha batter was hit by a pitch, moved to second by a sac bunt, and later driven in by a double to left field.
Kansas City could never find the rhythm on offense that they needed to walk-off the field with a win. The four hits for the Roos came off the bats of Kloe Hilbrenner, Sydney McQuinn, Ashley Thorne, and a lone extra-base hit by Delainey Fenoglio.
Game 2 – Omaha 11, Kansas City 8
Game two started differently as the Mavericks quickly hopped on top with a two-run homerun. But the Roos' answered back in the bottom of the second. The rally started with a walk by Lia Lombardini who then scored from first base on a double down the left field line by Thorne. Katherine Karnatz continued the two-out rally with a single that scored Thorne. Hilbrenner followed with a single and then Vonfeldt drilled another double that scored two for KC. The third double of the inning came off the bat of McQuinn who brought in the fifth run of the inning.
The battle didn't stop there. Omaha bounced back in the third to tie the game at 5-5 then grabbed the lead with back-to-back solo shots in the top of the fifth. Then up stepped the birthday girl, Thorne, who reclaimed the lead 8-7 with a three-run homerun. Her first homerun of the season gave Kansas City some life and the edge going into the sixth inning, but it was quickly taken by a Maverick's grand slam.
Kansas City tried three different pitchers in the circle, comprised of Camryn Stickel, Hayley Patterson, and Lombardini. The offense was ignited by Thorne who total two hits, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Karnatz followed with two hits, one RBI and one run scored.
