Willis hits a homerun and a triple to propel Kansas City to a victory in game one
Kansas City, MO – Kansas City (25-22, 9-11) split the second day of the series against Omaha (15-25, 9-10). The Roos mustered a come from behind victory late in game one, led by senior Faith Willis. They later fell in game two as the Mavericks jumped on top quickly.
The Roos will play Saint Louis University in a single game on Tuesday before they head to North Dakota this weekend for their final Summit League series of the regular season. Kansas City currently sits fourth in The Summit League standings with the potential to make up some ground next weekend before the conference tournament.
Game 1 – Omaha 2, Kansas City 5
Omaha cracked opened the score in the third inning with a two-run homerun. The Roos saw little offensive production until Faith Willis took it upon herself to change the momentum of the game. In the fifth inning, the senior smashed a solo homerun for her fourth of the season and cut Kansas City's deficit in half. Then she came back around in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and smashed a triple to right field that would give the Roos the 5-2 lead.
"We were very fortunate that Faith stepped and showed that senior leadership we needed to take a game in this series," Head Coach Kerry Shaw said. "She seized the opportunity with bases loaded and we needed that as a team."
The late rally began with the bat of Ashley Thorne, then came a single by Kloe Hilbrenner, and Ally Vonfeldt followed with a base hit of her own. Willis earned all four RBIs and tallied two hits. Hilbrenner also had two hits in the game.
Camryn Stickel got the nod in game three of the series and threw a complete game in the victory. Once the offense gained her the lead, she shut down the Mavs and gave her senior teammates a win on Senior Day. Stickel didn't get up any free passes and added a strikeout in the game.
Game 2 – Omaha 9, Kansas City 2
The Roos dug into their pitching depth chart in the final game of the series. Senior Hayley Patterson started the game, followed by senior Lia Lombardini who threw a season high six innings. Omaha saw both of KC's pitchers well to start the game, but Lombardini settled in and kept the Mavs scoreless in the third, fourth, and fifth innings.
"I commend Lia's senior leadership for stepping up when her team needed her and pitching almost a complete game after not getting much mound time this season," Shaw said.
Omaha's Kamryn Meyer kept the Roos off balance at the plate for most of the game for the second time this weekend. Karnatz started a small rally with a leadoff single. Vonfeldt then doubled to score Karnatz, followed by Willis who singled to bring in the second run for the Roos.
Delainey Fenoglio saw her first moments on the mound for Kansas City this season. She came into close the seventh inning and held the Mavs to one run. Fenoglio also earned a hit in the game.
