Mia Hoveland pitched a gem en route to a 4-2 win in game one, but the Coyotes took the second
Mia Hoveland took the circle in the first game, showing why she has been the Roos' ace all season long. Hoveland allowed just one earned run in seven innings, improving her ERA to 3.86 on the year. She gave up just seven hits in the complete-game effort, striking out five Coyotes along the way.
The Roos struck first in the third inning, as Alexis D'Ambrosio led the inning off with a single, advancing to second on a stolen base and to third on a wild pitch. Katherine Karnatz approached the plate and wasted no time, swinging at the first pitch she saw and taking it for a ride to right field for an RBI single. Karnatz now has 13 RBIs on the season, fifth-best on the team.
The game remained a pitchers' duel into the fifth inning, when South Dakota put its first run on the board following a Roo error. The Roos reclaimed the lead on a Sydney McQuinn single that scored Kloe Hilbrenner, but USD tied it right back up in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run.
In the top of the seventh, the Roos scored two runs while registering zero hits. Abby Sciara began the inning by reaching on a fielding error and Karnatz earned a walk. Then, Sciara scored on another error by the Coyotes, allowing Karnatz to advance to third. Lia Lombardini hit a sacrifice fly to score Karnatz, and the Roos' claimed a two-run lead.
Hoveland would get through the bottom of the seventh in 1-2-3 fashion and the Roos claimed the first game victory.
In the second game, Kansas City had trouble finding its bats. The Roos were held scoreless through the first three innings, while USD claimed a three-run lead, using two unearned runs.
Finally in the fourth, KC was able to string together some hits. Lombardini earned a walk to begin the inning, and Faith Willis singled to put two-on with zero outs. Lombardini scored on a throwing error by the Coyotes' catcher, and Willis came around on a double by McQuinn. But, the Coyotes responded with two runs of their own and the deficit remained at three.
South Dakota tagged on another run in the bottom of the sixth inning for security, leaving the Roos facing a 6-2 deficit with three outs remaining. D'Ambrosio, Lombardini and Willis all strung together hits to score two runs and put pressure on South Dakota, but it was too little, too late and the Coyotes escaped with the victory.
The Roos and Coyotes will be back in action for another double header tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
