Wichita, Kan. – Kansas City (18-16) traveled to another local powerhouse program this evening and gave #25 Wichita State (29-5) a battle in the hitting column. The game came down to a Shocker's solo homerun that couldn't be matched by the Roos. Wichita State is currently ranked #2 in the nation in homeruns per game and showcased the clutch long ball hitting tonight in the closely contested matchup.
"Wichita State has a wealth of talent and are very well coached," Head Coach Kerry Shaw said. "They are very deserving of their top-25 ranking."
The Shockers wasted no time on offense, scoring two in the first inning including their first homerun of the night. Kansas City made contact from the very beginning and went hit-for-hit with Wichita State. Delainey Fenoglio continued her hot streak by getting the Roos on the board with a double to right-center. Camryn Ramsey came into pinch run for Fenoglio and later crossed home plate on a single by Sydney McQuinn. The score remained 1-2 in favor of WSU until the Shockers tallied their second solo homerun of the night in the bottom of the fourth.
"They are a very solid team with a lot of gifted hitters, one through nine," Shaw said.
Kansas City used a fifth inning rally to tie the game and give the Roos another shot at an upset of a ranked team. Katherine Karnatz made great contact at the plate all night. She led the threat in the top of the fifth with single to centerfield and Kloe Hilbrenner followed with a hit up the middle. Then Ally Vonfeldt brought the score to 3-3 with a double to bring in her teammates.
"We took a bit to get going offensively and couldn't get the big hit when we had the chance to seize the momentum," Shaw said. "We have also had trouble staying away from the opponents long ball which has hurt us in recent games."
The game came down to power and Wichita State had enough to muster their final solo homerun and end the game with a 3-4 final score. KC matched WSU's nine hits led by Karnatz and McQuinn with two hits each.
It took a perfectly played defensive game and strong pitching effort to hold down a team who ranks top-15 in many offensive categories. Camryn Stickel started the game on the mound and gave Kansas City a solid two innings before Coach Shaw brought in Mia Hoveland to mix things up. Hoveland threw five strikeouts and only gave up three hits in her four innings pitched.
The Roos will head to Vermillion, SD to take on the University of South Dakota is a four-game conference series this Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon on Saturday, April 17.
