Roos Drop Heartbreaker to ORU

Kansas City held a commanding 2-0 lead, but the Golden Eagles scored the final three goals to win
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For 88-and-a-half minutes, Kansas City seemed in control of Oral Roberts. The Roos were cruising with a 2-0 lead in their regular season finale and preparing to watch Denver and Omaha with bated breath to see what would happen in the conference standings and a possible automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. However, three straight goals from Oral Roberts, including one in extra time, dashed those hopes as the Roos lost 3-2.
After two goals from Cesar Mont Soler and Dontell Gilyard in the second half, Kansas City looked ready to celebrate a victory in their home finale. Oral Roberts then scored two goals in the final minute to force extra time before scoring six minutes into the extra session to win.
"I can't fault the effort. The guys have done everything we asked them to do and for 88-and-a-half minutes, we were the better team,"Â Head Coach Ryan Pore said. "In soccer, it's 90 minutes and it's a painful one, we're going to have to learn and grow from it."
The game started quick with both teams understanding the importance of this game and playing up to the task. Kansas City then took control midway through the first half, but both teams went into the break tied at zero.
Mont Soler scored his goal at 59 minutes, the first of his career. Ryan Khedoo came cruising down the pitch, playing the ball over to Gilyard. Gilyard waited for Mont Soler to catch up, sending the ball his way and Mont Soler played the ball over and into the net with the help of a Golden Eagle defender.
Gilyard scored just six minutes later, rebounding a shot by Kevin Komodi and powering it past the ORU keeper.
Jony Munoz led the Roos with three shots. Gilyard, Gustavo Leal Murtha, Hugo Gutierrez Martinez, Khedoo, and Kevin Komodi each had two shots. Jordan Salt, Seth Kacich and Mont Soler had one apiece.
Seniors Khedoo and Sam Gettings were honored for their commitment to the Kansas City program prior to the game.
