BROOKINGS, S.D. – Kansas City (4-4-0) stepped up the tempo in the second game of the series but couldn't match the offense in the second half by South Dakota State (4-2-2). The game proved to be physical the entire 90-minutes with thirty fouls called between both teams. The game favored the Jackrabbits in the 0-2 final.
"I'm really proud of the team. It was a very physical game," Head Coach Jess Smith said. "We fought to the very end."
The defense had an impressive performance in the first half. The Roos didn't allow a single shot to their goal and threatened with two of their own on target for SDSU's goal. One goal attempt by Kansas City went off the goal post and could have been what Kansas City needed to grab the momentum. The game remained tied going into the break, but the Jackrabbits came out determined to step up their offensive attack.
South Dakota State stepped on the field after the break and quickly placed a shot in the back of the net five minutes into the second half. Four shots on frame were all the opposition needed to place two in the net and out of reach for the Roos' offense. Kansas City didn't place a single shot on goal in the second half, but had some great opportunities including a header that hit the back post late in the game.
"I'm really pleased with our effort today against the best team we've faced in conference," Smith said. "The difference was they had two chances that they finished really well and we didn't capitalize on our opportunities."
Kansas City travels back home for a bye week from Summit League competition. The Roos will host Omaha for a two-game series on Friday, March 19 and Sunday, March 21, both at 6 p.m. in Durwood Soccer Stadium. As it stands now, this will be a big battle for fourth place in The Summit League standings with implications on the post-season tournament.
