Grand Forks, ND. – Kansas City (4-8-1) fell in a tug of war battle to North Dakota (5-5-0) in the Roos' fourth overtime game played this week. After a corner kick conversion in the 53rd minute put the Roos ahead 1-0, the Eagles adjusted their frontline attack to equal the score and send the match to overtime. Following a hand ball call in the box, the Eagles made a penalty kick to finish in overtime, 2-1.  Though the match went to the Eagles, Kansas City showed resiliency in continuous placements in the offensive zone.
During the first half, the Roos came out determined to stay on the offensive side with numerous side angle shot attempts. Anna Jennings sent a grounder ball towards the goal but went just wide of the net. As the Eagles tried to spark their own attack, Kansas City defense held strong with a few solid saves by goalkeeper Mackenzie Caldwell. After a scoreless first half, the Roos came out energized and ready to charge in the Eagles territory.
"We had the momentum going into the half and coming out of the break. The team played with high energy and we were aggressively attacking. We knew it was a matter of time before we scored," Head Coach Jessica Smith said.
Keeping persistent with many close attempts, Rileigh Kuhns connected on a long shot into the center with assistance by Hayden Burnett for the goal in the 53rd minute of play. As the Roos led 1-0, Emma Wilson and Hayden Burnett were key in holding off the Eagles from crossing the middle zone.
In the 78th minute the Eagles broke through and tied the score 1-1, sending the match into overtime. With a hand ball penalty in the Roos box, the Eagles finished the match with a successful penalty goal in the 91st minute.
"I thought Emma and Hayden controlled the middle of the field today and didn't allow them to execute their game plan. Overall, we had a lot of players raise their level today and I'm happy with the resilience our group showed," Smith said.
The Roos will travel to Oral Roberts University next for two matches this Friday, April 2nd and Sunday, April 4th. For more information on Kansas City Women's Soccer follow on social media @kcrooswsoccer.
