Kansas City, MO – Kansas City (14-9) dropped the first day of the series against South Dakota State (17-4) in their Summit League conference opener.
"South Dakota State played better today," Head Coach Kerry Shaw said. "They are a very good team and we have to play better in order to beat them tomorrow."
The Roos will have a chance at SDSU in two more games tomorrow, Sunday March 28, to complete the four-game series. First pitch is set for noon in the double-header at the Urban Youth Academy, Home of Kansas City Softball.
Game No. 1 v. SDSU [FINAL 1-6]
Mia Hoveland was on the mound to start the series, recording nine strikeouts in five innings. The Jackrabbits caught on to Hoveland in the fourth, recording six hits and four runs. Clean defense and good pitching from the Jackrabbits kept the Roos from mounting a comeback.
"Their hitters made the necessary adjustments whereas we didn't against their pitchers," Shaw said.
Katherine Karnatz recorded the first hit and scored the only run for the Roos off a Lia Lombardini blooper to the outfield. Kloe Hilbrenner, Faith Willis, and Sydney McQuinn were the only other Roos to record hits in the game.
Hayley Patterson came in to close out the final two innings and notched two strikeouts. She gave up one run on a solo shot that gave SDSU the 1-6 win.
Game No. 2 v. SDSU [FINAL 3-4]
The Jackrabbits carried their momentum into the second game and jumped on it early by scoring two. Camryn Stickel did her best to keep South Dakota State from big innings. She finished the first five innings with four strikeouts and only giving up three earned runs.
Kansas City drew 10 walks but couldn't ever get the hit they needed to bring them in. The Jackrabbits were defensively sound and made diving plays all day that kept the Roos' chances minimal.
The Roos had their first chance in the bottom of the third but only got one across. Hilbrenner and Ally Vonfeldt both hit one-out singles. Lombardini took the free pass to load the bases and Faith Denning took four balls to grab an RBI. Kansas City left the bases loaded with an opportunity to change the momentum. The 11 runners left on base were the detrimental difference in game two for the Roos.
"SDSU delivered the clutch hit or made things happen offensively whereas we couldn't deliver the timely hit when we had opportunities to change the momentum of the game," Shaw said.
SDSU added one run in the fifth inning on a solo homerun that would prove to be the game winning run in the 3-4 final.
Ally Vonfeldt had a clutch two-run homerun in the final stretch. She drove her seventh homerun of the season over the left field fence to bring the game within one run going into the last inning.
Once again, Patterson came into finish out the game, holding South Dakota State scoreless and earning two strikeouts.
