Vonfeldt hits her eighth homerun of the season in series finale
Kansas City, MO – Kansas City (14-11) dropped the four-game series against South Dakota State (19-4) in their Summit League conference opener.
The Roos will travel to Springfield, Missouri on Tuesday to take on Missouri State in a single game before returning home for another Summit League conference series against North Dakota State next Friday and Saturday.
Game No. 1 v. SDSU [FINAL 2-6]
A solo shot from South Dakota State gave the Jackrabbits the lead in the top of the second and they never looked back.
The Roos' offense took a while to wake up but was started by the two and three-hole combination. Kloe Hilbrenner and Ally Vonfeldt hit back-to-back singles in the third. Lia Lombardini stepped up and recorded an unconventional hit that scored Hilbrenner to tie the game.
SDSU capitalized on base hits with runners in scoring position to put away a Kansas City offense who has been in a slump as of late. Lombardini hit a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the sixth to try and spark a rally but the game would end 2-6.
The pitching performances have been enough to keep Kansas City in the game. Mia Hoveland started the third game of the series and kept the Jackrabbits' hitters from big innings, recording six strikeouts for 106 total on the season.
Game No. 2 v. SDSU [FINAL 2-7]
SDSU mustered enough hits in the second inning to get the three-run lead they needed to win. They added one each in the third, fourth, fifth, and seventh.
Kansas City added one run to the board in the third. Delainey Fenoglio singled to start the inning and Hilbrenner started the two-out rally with an infield single. Vonfeldt followed with a blooper that scored Macy Hornosky who came into pinch run for Fenoglio.
Another solo homerun by Vonfeldt in the sixth narrowed the lead by one. That marked Vonfeldt's second long ball of the weekend. She recorded both RBIs in the game for the Roos.
Camryn Stickel started the series finale and Hayley Patterson came in to close the last two innings. They gave Kansas City a chance to fight back on offense, but the Roos couldn't string anything together.
