ST. LOUIS, Mo. –Kansas City Women's Soccer (0-1) traveled to the other side of the state for their 2020 season opener. Promise was shown in a tough battle to the finish, but the Roos fell short in a 1-4 final that was ultimately decided by offensive possession. Kansas City's young roster did not shy away from taking on the Saint Louis Billikens (1-0) who were named the Atlantic 10 Conference pre-season favorite and after today has only lost one of their last 44 home games.
The starting eleven showcased many new faces including six freshmen. The only two Roos to start the majority of the 2019 season were senior Hayden Burnett and junior Emma Wilson. The growth potential shows promising as seven more underclassmen came off the bench to give strong minutes for the Roos.
"We have a young roster in age and experience," Head Coach Jess Smith explained. "Our development is going to be a process and we are going to learn from this game."
Senior Burnett showed veteran leadership to give the Roos the lead early, knocking in her first career goal and first goal of the season for Kansas City in the 13-minute mark. The goal was assisted by two freshmen, Anna Jennings and Rileigh Kuhns.
"I'm really excited for of our team captain (Hayden Burnett), she was hungry for the ball on the back post," Smith said. "I am really happy she scored her first career goal."
The early lead by the Roos didn't last long as the Billikens put two past our defense in each period for four total unanswered goals. Getting shots off proved to be the difference, as Saint Louis out shot Kansas City thirty-to-four. The corner kick column also ended lopsided with the Billikens getting 17 more opportunities than the Roos to set up offensive strikes from the corner flag.
Kansas City's defense was resilient throughout the game, including freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Caldwell who grabbed seven saves in her first career start. Burnett and Kuhns together tallied the three shots on goal to lead the Roos' offense.
"We will be back on the training field tomorrow and work towards our conference opening weekend," Smith said.
The Roos will transition into their Summit League conference schedule next week. The North Dakota State Bison come to Kansas City for a two-game series at Durwood Soccer Stadium scheduled for Friday Feb. 12 and Sunday Feb. 14 at 11am and 1pm, respectively.
