KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Jonaie Johnson led the Kansas City Women's Basketball (4-4, 1-1) team with nine points, four rebounds and three assists, but reigning Summit champion South Dakota was too much to handle, defeating the Roos, 92-34.
"We didn't play like the team that I know we are," Head Coach Jacie Hoyt. "Everyone on the team knows that. It's about pride at this point and I didn't think we had any."
The Coyotes were on fire from the field all game long, connecting on 55-percent of their shot attempts. Kansas City had trouble finding its stride amidst South Dakota's size, shooting a season-low 29-percent from the field.
Jocelyn Ewell was a bright spot for the Roos, playing in her first-ever Summit League action. The freshman from Mission Viejo, Calif. notched five points and four rebounds, both career-highs.
Naomie Alnatas finished the day with eight points, including a pair of threes, but could not find a rhythm due to foul trouble. It marked the first time in the past six games that she did not lead the Roos in the scoring column.
Kansas City has another shot at the Coyotes tomorrow at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the Roo Sports Network.
"We need to play with pride and a sense of urgency and intensity," Hoyt said. "If we do that, I don't think there are a lot of basketball adjustments to be made."
