Tom Kruse Wins Three-Set Thriller in Loss
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Men's Tennis team (0-2) entered Tuesday's match against Wichita State (7-3) searching for its first win of the season. The Shockers were coming off of a 5-1 win over Creighton earlier in the day and stayed in that groove against the Roos, as they once again took a 5-1 decision.
"We ran into a hot Shocker team today that was playing with a lot of confidence," Head Coach Kendell Hale said.
Tom Kruse picked up the Roos' lone point on the day at the number two spot, winning a three-set battle over the Shockers' Orel Ovil. The duel started in Kruse's favor, picking up a 6-4 first set victory before Ovil responded with a 6-4 decision of his own. The third set was all Kruse, clinching the match at 6-3.
"Tom had a great win at number two singles," Hale said. "He learned from his split setter against Nebraska and proved why he's a super senior. I loved the poise he played with throughout his match."
Jake Fraunfelder put up a solid fight at four, falling 6-3, 7-6 (8). He would not go down easily, fighting off three match points before the Shockers' Yi Jui Lo took the point.
Diego Giraldo fell at the one spot, but after losing 6-2 in the first set, played with poise down the stretch before dropping the second frame 7-5.
