KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Tennis was recently recognized by the NCAA and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for their work in the classroom. The women's tennis program is a recipient of the NCAA Public Recognition Award, which is awarded to teams with an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of that sport based on the APR data released in May.
The Roos' women's tennis team earns this NCAA distinction for the fifth-straight year. Also, the award is the sixth overall with the other coming back in 2006-07. The six total listings is the most of any sport in KC history.
"I'm super happy for the academic accolades of our student athletes," said head coach Kendell Hale. "These individuals have shown great perseverance as they had many hurdles to overcome due to COVID and having to go online the remainder of the spring season. What they did not get a chance to prove on the court, they proved in the classroom."
In addition, six women's tennis players and four men's tennis individuals were listed as a 2019-20 ITA Scholar-Athlete.
On the men's side, senior Tom Kruse, sophomore Neil O'Connor, freshman Kacper Piekarek and graduate student Austin Williams were honored. For Kruse, the ITA achievement his is third in his career. Leading the way for the women is four-time recipients and seniors Katie Fries and Yana Grechkina. Also collecting the award is junior Grace Ball, senior Tan Vale, sophomore Riddhi Sharma and freshman Rhiannon McBlane.
ITA scholar-athletes must meet the following criteria: 1.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 2.) be listed on the institutional eligibility form.
