Roos Fight with Huskers, but Ultimately Cannot Prevail
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Kansas City men's tennis team (0-1) opened its spring season on Sunday afternoon, falling to the University of Nebraska (1-3), 7-0. The Roos were able to keep tough with the Huskers, but ultimately were outlasted.Â
"We started really well on 2 and 3 doubles but the point just got away from us, unfortunately this was also the case for a lot of tight sets in the singles too," Assistant Coach Ben Stride said. "There were a lot of positives moving forward and the guys learned a lot."
In doubles, Kansas City made it known immediately that the match was not going to be an easy one for Nebraska. After Diego Giraldo and Tom Kruse fell in number one doubles, Austin Williams and Jake Fraunfelder evened up the score by pulling out a 6-3 win at twos. Kacper Piekarek and Brian King hung with the Huskers Dean/Wickwire number three team, but could not pull out the point for the Roos, falling 7-5.
In singles, Giraldo, Kruse, Williams and Piekarek all made Nebraska sweat. Giraldo fought back from a break down twice in the first set, but ultimately lost 7-5, 7-5.
Kruse won his first set, but could not keep pace with Nebraska's Cacciatore, falling 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Williams gave great effort in his first singles match as a Roo, falling 6-4, 7-5. Piekarek took both sets to the wire, but could not pull through.
The Roos will be back in action on Tuesday, taking on Wichita State at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City.
