Game No. 1 Recap vs. Texas Southern
Â
Kansas City Softball faced off against Texas Southern in its third game of the Maverick Classic. The Roos couldn't find its offense, falling by a score of 2-0.
Â
The pitching staff had it rolling all game for both teams. STU struck early with a run in the first inning. Packard set them down in order in the second, but gave up another in the third. Sophomore Mia Hoveland came in for the Roos in relief and shut STU's offense down. She went 3.1 innings, giving up no runs and racking up three strikeouts.
Â
Despite six hits for the Roos, they couldn't find the scoreboard. One of those hits came from freshman Maggie Klover, her first collegiate hit. For the CF out of Lone Jack, Mo., it is the first of many. Senior Chyanne Onstad was the lone Roo with multiple hits, going 2-4. As a team, the Roos had trouble squaring up STU pitcher Naomi Reyes. Of the Roos six hits, all were singles.

Game No. 2 Recap vs. UT-Arlington
Â
The Roos matched up with UT Arlington in the final game of the day. Coming into this game, UTA defeated its two opponents in the Maverick Classic (SFA and STU) by run-rule (+8). The Roos battled, but fell to the Mavericks 12-3 in 6 innings.
Â
The Roos were able to find the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning, courtesy of a Katherine Karnatz double that scored Faith Willis. For the freshman, that marked her first hit and RBI in her collegiate career.
Â
Junior transfer Hayley Patterson made her first appearance as a Roo against tough competition. She went 3.1 innings, giving up four runs and two strikeouts.
Â
In the fourth inning, Macy Hornosky came in as a pinch hitter and produced right off the bench. She sent a shot to the left side past a Maverick, scoring two runs to pull the Roos to within nine.
Â
Despite the bats heating up late, the Roos couldn't mount a comeback, falling to UTA by run rule in 6 innings.
"We swung the bats much better but the lead was just a little too large." said Shaw. "But, IÂ was proud of the way that we kept competing even though we were staring at such a large deficit."

"Our inability to string together any type of hitting led to us being shut out," said head coach Kerry Shaw. "Chy Onstad just missed a game tying HR in the 5th with a shot that was just foul and we just didn't do enough offensively."Â
In the final inning, the Roos were looking to make a comeback. Ashlynn Williams led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. Then, Karnatz reached on an error. The Roos had the baserunners they were looking for all game with no outs. However, STU was able to work out of danger to seal the 2-0 victory.Â
