Roos Take on Third-Place 'Runners at Swinney Center Tomorrow at 2 PM
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City Women's Basketball (15-10, 8-3) enters a Saturday Western Athletic Conference (WAC) matchup with CSU Bakersfield (14-9, 6-4) looking to bounce back from its first loss in nearly a month. The Roos and 'Runners currently sit side-by-side in the WAC standings, with Kansas City in second, and CSUB tied for third.
- With 19 points on Thursday, Ericka Mattingly became the 16th player in Kansas City history to surpass the 1,000 point mark. She is just the second to do so while only donning the Roo uniform for two years, joining Stephanie Worthy, who scored 1,268 career points from 1984-86.
- Since the beginning of the conference schedule, Cristina Soriano has turned it to a new level. After reaching the double-double mark once in the season's first 14 games, she has gone for seven double-doubles in 11 WAC games. Soriano is averaging 12.2 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game in WAC play.
- After missing the previous four games due to injury, Awal Ajak was back in the lineup on Thursday in a limited role. The senior finished with no points in 10 minutes, but will be looked upon to contribute valuable time down the stretch, as she ranks 10th in the WAC in three-point percentage (.337).
- The Roos are one of the best teams in the conference at defending in the paint. The average 4.5 blocks per game, most in the WAC. Soriano and Tajah Foster-Walker each average above a block per game. If they finish the season that way, they would be the first Roo duo since at least 2003-04 (as far as stat archives will go) to do so.
- A win on Saturday would secure at least a .500 season for the second year in a row. This is a feat that has not been accomplished by the Roos in the past 15 seasons.
Last Time Out: Grand Canyon def. KC, 62-56
- Ericka Mattingly scored 19 points to lead the Roos, all coming in the first three quarters. She drew seven fouls in the game, resulting in three and-one opportunities.
- Cristina Soriano added 15 points, her 11th double-digit effort in the past 12 games.
- Grand Canyon's Jada Holland scored 10-straight fourth quarter points, and the Lopes ended the game on an 11-0 run.
- After shooting 42% in the first three quarters, the Roos were held to 2-of-13 shooting in the fourth quarter.
Last Time Against CSUB: CSUB won, 70-60 (1/16/20)
- The 'Runners were one of just two teams to defeat the Roos in the first round of WAC play.
- Emily Ivory hit a season-high seven three-pointers, leading the team with 21 points.
- CSUB had the advantage in the paint, outscoring the Roos 36-18.
- Kansas City pulled down 19 offensive rebounds, but was able to convert them into just nine points.Â
- The 'Runners were on fire from the field, converting on 46.6% of their field goal attempts.
All-Time Series vs. CSUB
- Bakersfield extended its all-time lead against the Roos in January, as it has now won 12-of-14 games, including the last four straight.
- The Roos will be looking for their first-ever win against CSUB in Kansas City.
