Soriano, Mattingly Finish with Double-Doubles; Alnatas Brings Down Nine Boards
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City women's basketball team (12-9, 5-2 WAC) wanted revenge from last year's 95-92 double overtime defeat at the hands of California Baptist (9-11, 1-5 WAC) in the Swinney Center, and revenge they got. The Roos pummeled the Lancers on the offensive glass, winning the rebounding battle by 25, and came away with a 75-65 victory.
"Our guards did a great job," Head Coach Jacie Hoyt said. "It was more than just a height advantage, it was effort and simply going to the glass. We did a great job of that."
The first quarter was fast paced and high octane. The Roos dropped 26 points, their fourth-highest scoring quarter of the season, fueled by eight points out of the gate by Cristina Soriano. Soriano led the team in points (17), rebounds (13) and assists (6), while piecing together her seventh double-double in the past eight games.
"I prepared a lot during the week," Soriano said. "I knew how this game was going to develop, and we had the advantage. I just played to my full potential and my teammates worked hard to get me the ball and help me."

The Lancers did not lie down. They scored 21 in the first quarter and outscored Kansas City in the second, cutting the lead down to four at half. CBU connected on six of their 14 first half three-point attempts.Â
It was Emily Ivory's second quarter that helped keep the Lancers at bay. She dropped three triples in the second frame for her only nine points on the day.Â

"My coaches and my teammates always feed me confidence, no matter what," Ivory said. "They just give me the ball and feed me great passes."
In the second half, the Roos came ready for the Lancers' three-point barrage. They held CBU to just 1-of-8 shooting from range in the third quarter, allowing just nine points.Â
"After the first half of feeling the pace that they play at and the amount of shots that they take, we challenged our team to play earlier and make that adjustment. I thought we did a good job of that," Hoyt said.
The Roos were not granted a single free throw through the first three quarters, but made the most of their attempts in the fourth. They connected on 7-of-7 free shots and shot 46.7% from the field in the final frame to win their second straight Western Athletic Conference game and finish the month of January with a 5-2 record.
Ericka Mattingly added her second double-double of the year with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Jonaie Johnson continued her high-level play, finishing with 12 points and eight boards. Naomie Alnatas provided life off of the bench for the Roos, putting up seven points and a career-high nine rebounds.
