KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City (9-10, 2-3) lost for the first time all year at home, falling to CSU Bakersfield (8-10, 2-1), 74-64, in overtime tonight in men's basketball conference action. The 'Runners out-scored the hosts 18-8 in overtime and Kansas City dropped to 6-1 at Swinney Center. The Roos needed one more home victory to tie the 2010-11 program for the best home start in school history at 7-0.
Senior Jordan Giles finished with a team-high 19 points, while junior Brandon McKissic notched 15 points and freshman Josiah Allick netted 10 and corralled eight rebounds.
The Roos came all the way back from 14 points down to lead much of the second half. The effort was there all night, in spite of their leading scorer out with an injury for the second-straight game (Javan White) and a guy that was averaging nearly 19 points in conference (Jahshire Hardnett) recording three points.
CSU Bakersfield put on a clinic in the first 11 minutes of the game hitting its first nine shots from the field en route to a 23-11 lead. The 'Runners went up by their largest advantage of 14 points on two occasions, the last at 31-17 at the 4:52 mark. The Roos closed out the half putting in nine of the final 11 points to get within 33-26.
Freshman Maks Klanjscek was the first-half spark for Kansas City swishing a trio of three-pointers. His third bomb at 2:32 whittled the deficit to 31-25 and capped an 8-0 run.
CSU Bakersfield cooled down to 66.7 percent (12-for-18) shooting in the first 20 minutes.
The start of the second half was a polar opposite of the first. CSU Bakersfield missed on its first five shots at the same time the Roos scored 11-straight points. Under the 16-minute media timeout, Kansas City held its first lead of the game at 37-33.
The Roos' margin got as large as six points at the 6:50 mark, but the 'Runners tied it up at 51-51 after a free throw. After a Marvin Nesbitt Jr. lay-up put Kansas City up by two points, a pair of free throws by Shawn Stith with 52-seconds remaining forced the game into overtime.
CSU Bakersfield opened the overtime frame with five-straight points and the Roos could never recover.
Klanjscek finished with nine points in a career-high 34 minutes. Nesbitt tied Allick for the team lead with eight rebounds.
CSU Bakersfield's Justin Edler-Davis had a game-high 25 points, De'Monte Buckingham added 16 points and Justin McCall snatched 12 rebounds to go along with eight points.
Kansas City shot a season-high 31 times from the free throw line connecting on 20 for a 65 percent clip. CSU Bakersfield went 22-of-33 (.667) from the charity stripe.
The Roos next host Grand Canyon Saturday at 7 p.m.
