BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Kansas City women's basketball team entered a big matchup with CSU Bakersfield searching for its first three-game winning streak this season after two victories at home last week. The Roos hung tight with the Roadrunners for the first 20 minutes, but their interior defense was not enough to stop the onslaught of CSUB, and the Roos fell, 70-60.
Emily Ivory hit her stride in Sunday's win over New Mexico State, and picked up where she left off against the 'Runners. CSUB and Kansas City traded three-point baskets back and forth in the first quarter, led by two from Ivory.
"Emily was a special player tonight," Head Coach Jacie Hoyt said. "She did a great job of moving without the ball and making contested shots."
There was no slowing Ivory down in the second quarter either, as she buried two more triples. The Roos fell behind by as many as eight points midway through the quarter, but battled back to bring it within one at the break.
Coming out of halftime, Bakersfield began running a full court press that gave the Roos fits. They committed seven turnovers in the third quarter, which turned into eight points for the Roadrunners. CSUB dropped 23 third quarter points and extended their lead to double digits going into the fourth.
"We let them speed us up offensively and take uncharacteristic shots," Hoyt said.
Ivory added two more fourth quarter threes, joined by Ericka Mattingly and Mandy Willems in the long game, but it was too little too late for the Roos. They fell behind by as many as 17 points, and did not have enough to battle back. Ivory's seven triples were a season-high for Kansas City, finishing with a game-high 21 points.
The Roadrunners' Jayden Eggleston and Vanessa Austin made Kansas City pay down in the paint, finishing with a combined 34 points. The Roos were doubled up, 36-18 in the lane.
"We need to be better at finishing in an uptempo game like tonight," Hoyt said.
Kansas City has a quick turnaround, as they will be back in action on Saturday at Grand Canyon.
