KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City graduated senior women's soccer player Lexie Howard is one of two NCAA Woman of the Year nominees from the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The native of Kearney, Mo., was nominated by the University in late June, which then was sent to the conference offices. READ MORE on that story. She joins Erica Wang of California Baptist as representatives from the WAC. Overall, there were 148-other conference-level honorees nominated for the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year.
The Top 30 honorees, comprising 10 women from each division, will be named by the NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee in September. The selection committee will then narrow the pool to nine finalists — with three from each division — in early October. From those finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will select the 2019 Woman of the Year.
The 2019 Woman of the Year will be named, and the Top 30 honorees will be celebrated, at the annual banquet Oct. 20 in Indianapolis.
"Another great honor for Lexie Howard and a great achievement for UMKC, Kansas City Athletics and KC Roos Women's Soccer!" said head coach Chris Cissell. "Congratulations to all of us who were fortunate enough to have assisted Lexie Howard during her record-breaking career on the field, in the classroom and within the community. I am a very proud coach and I am so happy for Lexie and her family and our entire Soccer Family!"
Howard was a 2018 United Soccer Coaches Pacific All-Region Second Team and all-WAC First Team selection. She ends her illustrious Roo career with the most points (96) and goals (38) in school history. This past year, she tied for 13th in the NCAA in assists (10) and tied for 33rd in total points (30).
A two-time team captain, the Roos won two WAC regular-season titles during her career. During her senior season, the team posted the most wins in program history (15) and ranked eighth regionally.
In the community, Howard coached eighth grade soccer, participated in Saint Paul's Outreach and Uplift, delivering food to the homeless, and served as a math tutor. She also collected toys for Boys & Girls Club and read to children. The secretary of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as a senior, she was involved in the search committee for the new Director of Athletics. She twice earned the Circle of Champions Award.
The NCAA Woman of the Year program has recognized graduating female student-athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership since its inception in 1991.
