Halley Dean also places first in 5,000m run
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Kansas City's Track and Field long distance runners competed in the 2019 Mel Tjeerdsma Classic hosted by Northwest Missouri State on Friday. While most Roo athletes competed in the Bob Timmons Classic in Lawrence, Kan., the distance runners took their talents down to Maryville and came back with a couple PR's and titles.Â
Most impressively, sophomore Sommer Herner had a meet to remember. She competed in two individual events (mile run and 1000m run) and posted two PR's and a first and second place finish.
In the 1000m run, Herner dominated the competition, clocking in at 2:54.46 (PR), a full 20 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. This impressive time set the school record, previously held by Hanna Miller in 2017 ( 2:57.29).Â
However, Herner's brilliance on the track did not stop there. She set another PR on her way to a second place finish in the mile run. Her time of 4:57.13 ranks second in school history to only Olympic competitor Courtney Frerichs, who ran a 4:55.56 back in 2013.Â
Halley Dean competed in one event for the Roos, the 5000m run, and brought back a first place finish as well. Dean's time of 17:02.61 ranks second best in school history, also second to only Courtney Frerichs who ran an insane 15:47.56 in 2015.Â
Junior Katherine Hanners finished the 5000m right behind Dean, clocking in with her PR of 17:13.58 and a second place finish.Â
On the men's long distance side, sophomore Max Selbach placed 11th in the 5000m run with a time of 14:47.64. This marked his PR, as this was only his fourth time running in this event in his collegiate career. Â
The Roos next compete at the Missouri Intercollegiate on January 17.Â
