NM State, UTRGV Will Make Trip To Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City volleyball team will host New Mexico State and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley this weekend, looking to avenge their 0-5 combined record against both squads from 2018.
Season Overview
- The Roos have started Western Athletic Conference play 5-1, their best conference start since 2014, when they began WAC play 10-0.
- Alicia Harrington rattled off Kansas City's first two 20+ kill matches of the season in back-to-back games, compiling 22 against Utah Valley and 20 against Seattle U.
- The Roos stacked the stat book last week, setting or tying six individual career highs (Alex Ratzlaff, five aces vs. UVU; Alli Schomers, nine kills vs. UVU & five blocks vs. Seattle U; Maddie Renn, 24 digs vs. UVU; Raina Smith, 12 kills vs. UVU; Mykal Sadler, nine blocks vs. Seattle U).
- Schomers posted one of the best stat lines of her career against Utah Valley, with nine kills, 52 assists, two aces, 10 digs and four blocks. With 587 assists on the season, Schomers has eclipsed the 2,000 career assist mark (2,014), putting her at fifth in Roo history.
- Harrington has recorded three-straight double-doubles, averaging 18 kills and 15 digs per match. She is the first Roo to post three double-doubles in a row since she accomplished the feat in October of her sophomore year.
- With nine block assists against Seattle U, Mykal Sadler tied the Kansas City program record for most block assists in a five-set match. Three other Roos have reached this milestone in the past.
NM State
- After falling to New Mexico State in both regular season matches and the WAC semifinals last season, Kansas City now holds a 2-12 all-time record against the Aggies. Since 2015, NM State has won 10-straight head-to-heads.
- After averaging 3.91 kills per set on .500 hitting last week, the Aggies' Megan Hart took home WAC Offensive Player of the Week, the second Player of the Week honor of her career.
- As a team, NM State leads the WAC in hitting percentage, kills per set and blocks per set.
UTRGV
- Despite dropping both matches last season, the Roos hold an 8-5 all-time advantage over the Vaqueros. All five of UTRGV's victories have come in the last seven meetings.
- UTRGV's senior libero, Samaret Caraballo, was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week last week. She averaged 5.88 digs per set last week, and her 4.51 season average is second in the conference.
- The Vaqueros picked up their first-ever victory over a Big Ten opponent earlier this season, defeating Maryland (current RPI ranking no. 99) on Sep. 6.
