KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Forward Kelsey Mothershead (Smithville, Mo.) led UMKC women's soccer to a 4-0 victory over Oral Roberts on Sunday afternoon, scoring three goals on four shot attempts. The 'Roos jumped out to a fast start, scoring two goals within the first 23 minutes of play and never looked back from that point.
“This is the way we can play,” UMKC head coach Chris Cissell said. “It took us a while to get to this point but if we are firing on all cylinders with one nonconference game left. I feel like this is perfect timing.”
Just eight minutes into the game, Mothershead gave UMKC (3-6-2) the early 1-0 lead, when she knocked in her team-high fourth goal of the season. MF Reighan Childers (Grain Valley, Mo.) was credited with her first assist of the year on the play.
The 'Roos found the net again in the 22nd minute, after MF Sydni Young (O'Fallon, Mo.) regained possession from a loose ball scramble, which resulted in Young tapping in an unassisted goal from six yards out and giving the 'Roos a 2-0 lead.
At halftime, UMKC outshot the Golden Eagles (5-6-1) 8-3, including 3-0 in shots on goal. The 'Roos also led in corner kicks 2-1.
Coming out of the locker room, UMKC continued to show its aggression, as the team collected its third goal of the day in the 68th minute. With the assist courtesy of Sammi Arch (Overland Park, Kan.), Mothershead connected on her second goal of the afternoon from 10 yards out.
In the 74th minute, Mothershead completed the hat trick, knocking in her third goal of the game to beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one play. The goal extended her team-high lead to six goals on the season.
“I went in and everything happened to go our way,” Mothershead said. “We've been practicing all of the stuff that we've been needing to work on and it worked out for us.”
UMKC finished the match outshooting Oral Roberts 12-6 in shots and 6-0 in shots on goal, and led 4-1 in corner kicks.
GK Anna Lillig (Kansas City, Mo.) posted her second shutout of the year, which lead to her collecting her first victory of her sophomore campaign. UMKC's defense also prevented Oral Roberts from firing off any shots on goal, as the team held the Golden Eagles to only six shots.
On Friday, UMKC will travel west to Manhattan, Kansas, for its final nonconference matchup and face Kansas State at 7 p.m.
