Kangaroos Take Down Redbirds In Tennis Action

(Kansas City, Mo.) – UMKC men's tennis picked up its 15th win of the season after taking down Missouri Valley foe Illinois State 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the Plaza Tennis Center.
Airam Castellano and Mike Psarros got the 'Roos off on the right foot, taking the match at No. 1 doubles 6-1, but Illinois State quickly evened doubles play as the Redbird's No. 3 won over Vinh Pham and Andrey Smirnov 7-6 (7-3).
UMKC, though, would claim the doubles point as the No. 2 pairing of Uldis Gaismins and Amaury Navette held off Illinois State 7-5 in the tiebreaker for the 7-6 victory.
Castellano kept the 'Roos momentum going at No. 1 singles, as the Spain native notched his 24th victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-0 win, while Smirnov made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) victory at No. 2, his 12th this year.
Gaismins, meanwhile, sealed the victory for UMKC with his 16th win, taking the point at No. 3 7-5, 6-3.
Psarros and Pham pushed the 'Roos point total to six as the duo claimed victories at No. 4 and No. 5 with 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 and 6-4, 7-5 wins, respectively, giving Psarros his 20 win and Pham his 16th during the 2015-16 season.
Marc Santamaria, meanwhile, dropped the 'Roos lone singles match at No. 6, falling 6-0, 7-6 (7-5).
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again on Monday when they wrap-up regular season play against rival Rockhurst at 1 p.m. on the Plaza.
