(Las Cruces, N.M.) - The UMKC men's tennis squad had to come from behind, and took a crucial 4-3 win over Seattle Friday in Las Cruces, moving to 2-0 in WAC play.
The Redhawks (8-12, 0-2 WAC) used solid doubles play to take the 1-0 lead, getting a key win at the No. 1 position, followed by a 7-5 decision at No. 3.
UMKC (11-6, 2-0 WAC) knew it needed four singles wins to take the match, and that is exactly what it did. The Roos got straight set wins in each of them, with Airam Castellano winning at No. 1, Uldis Gaismins at No. 3, Mike Psarros at No. 4 and Amaury Navette taking the contest at No. 6. In fact, Navette clinched the match at 4-1 before the Redhawks rallied for three-set wins at No. 2 and 5 to close the gap to 4-3.
In the process, Castellano earned his 20th singles win of the year, breaking the school record for wins in a season. He also has 12 dual wins at the No. 1 position, just four away from matching that record.
The Roos will be off next week before hosting their final three regular season WAC matches at home from April 8-10 at the Plaza Tennis Center.
