Aggies Come from Behind to Knock Off Roos, 4-3

(Kansas City, Mo.) - The UMKC men's tennis team led for much of the day, but in the end a pair of three-set matches went for New Mexico State, resulting in a 4-3 Aggie victory on Friday at the Plaza Tennis Center.
The match started well for the Roos (11-7, 2-1 WAC), who secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The clinching match came from Airam Castellano and Mike Psarros at No. 1, taking a 6-4 decision after each team had won a match.
In singles play, NMSU stormed out of the gate with wins at No. 5 and No. 4, but Uldis Gaismins put the Roos back in it, tying the match 2-2 with a victory at the No. 3 position. Castellano followed that with a three-set win at the No. 1 position to give UMKC a 3-2 lead in the match.
That is when the Aggies came through, first at No. 2, after UMKC won the first set 6-0, and were a game away from clinching the match, Chrstofer Goncalves stormed back to force a tiebreak and win the set, followed by another set win in the third. That left it all up to No. 6, but NMSU's Enrique Asmar dominated the decisive third set to clinch the match.
UMKC will face UTRGV at 10 a.m. Saturday morning in its second match of the cluster. The Roos can still claim a share of the regular season title with two more wins this weekend.
