Roos Open WAC Play with 7-0 Win Over Cougars Thursday

(Las Cruces, N.M.) - UMKC men's tennis dominated in a 7-0 WAC-opening victory Thursday over Chicago State on the campus of New Mexico State in the first league cluster.
The Roos (10-6, 1-0 WAC) knew they would get at least a point going in as the Cougars (2-12, 0-1 WAC) had only five players available for the match. They took care of business in doubles anyway, winning at both No. 1 and No. 2 in convincing fashion.
In singles, UMKC picked up the default point at No. 6, and won in straight sets at four positions. Senior Andrey Smirnov was pushed to a third set at No. 2, but he prevailed to make it a clean sweep.
Sophomore Airam Castellano matched the school record with his 19th victory of the season, while also moving into the top four in dual wins at No. 1 with his 11th dual format victory at the top spot this season.
UMKC will face Seattle Friday morning to wrap up the first weekend of WAC play.
