(Kansas City, Mo.) – UMKC women's basketball dropped its exhibition contest on Friday night at the Swinney Recreation, 58-52, despite a near double-double from Kiana Law, as the sophomore finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and two steals.
“Every game is a work in progress,” Head Coach Marsha Frese said. “We've had some adversity this last week that we are adapting to as we move forward and we are happy to get this first one under our belt. It's obviously not the result we want, but we have an opportunity to learn early in this season and hopefully we take the lessons from tonight and prepare for next Friday.”
Rockhurst struck first to open the game, but UMKC answered with the next ten points, getting two buckets from Aries Washington, one from Law and one each from first year 'Roos Ceidra Coleman and Daijane Dillard. The Hawks, though, closed the period with eight of the final ten points to cut the lead to 12-10 after the first period.
In the second stanza, UMKC stretched its lead back to seven at 24-17 after three straight field goals from Kristen Moore, Coleman and Law. Rockhurst answered with a jumper, but Coleman hit a jumper from the right baseline to close the half with the 'Roos up 26-19.
Coming out of halftime, UMKC stretched its lead to a game-high nine at 32-23 when Taylor Leathers buried a jumper, but a 14-4 run by RU gave the Hawks a 37-36 advantage. From that point, Rockhurst extended its lead to as many as six and the Kangaroos would never regain control of the game as the Hawks won the contest.
Washington was the second 'Roo in double figures, scoring 10 points with six rebounds and two assists, while Leathers chipped in eight points, five rebounds and two blocks.
“We had to adjust this week with injuries changing our lineup,” Leathers said. “Daijane stepped up at the point, but as a team we have to do a better job collectively taking care of the ball. We have to do a better job at our shot selection, not taking the first shot, but moving the ball and getting a good shot.”
The regular season kicks-off in one week at the SRC against North Florida on Nov. 13.
