(Kansas City, Mo.) – Four 'Roos scored in double figures, led by Aries Washington who finished with a season-high 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 shooting at the line, as UMKC women's basketball fell 78-65 to Southeast Missouri State at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
“I'm proud of how hard our team fought until the end tonight,” Head Coach Marsha Frese said. “Our young team took a big step forward in the second half despite the slow start. Individually we are starting to see what different players are capable of. We just have to keep working hard to mesh those skills together.”
Sophomore Kiana Law was the second Kangaroo in double figures, scoring 12 points and grabbing seven rebounds, while Taylor Leathers and Kristen Moore each notched 10 points and five rebounds. Law and Moore, meanwhile, each dished out two assists.
The loss drops the 'Roos to 0-3 in the early part of the season, while the Redhawks improve to 3-1.
Kansas City struck first in the contest on a jumper from Law, but SEMO followed with a 19-2 run before Leathers ended the rally with a three.
UMKC would add two more buckets on jumpers from Leathers and Paige Husa, but Southeast held a 26-11 lead after the first period.
To start the second, SEMO stretched the lead to a first half high of 17 at 28-11, but UMKC began chipping away, eventually cutting the lead to nine when Daijane Dillard drilled a three with 2:56 left in the half.
The Redhawks, though, closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 44-29 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, Southeast pushed its lead to 20 at 57-37, before matching the lead at 69-49 at the end of the third quarter.
At the start of the fourth, Southeast Missouri State built the lead to a game-high 23, but the Kangaroos answered with 8-0 run, featuring four points from Law and two each from Moore and Washington.
SEMO would extend the lead back to 17, but four straight from Washington cut the lead down to 13 with just over three minutes left to play.
The Kangaroos, however, would be unable to complete the comeback as the Redhawks held on for the 78-65 win.
Samantha Waldron narrowly missed becoming the fifth 'Roo in double figures with nine points, while Kelsey Barrett handed out a team-best three assists to go along with three rebounds.
As a team, the Kangaroos out-rebounded the Redhawks 33 to 27, leading to a 15-8 edge in second chance points. Inside, UMKC notched 24 points in the paint.
The Blue & Gold will be back in action again after Thanksgiving when they welcome in Indiana State, Stephen F. Austin and SIU Edwardsville for the Plaza Lights Classic on Nov. 27-28.
