Kansas City Men Roll Past Cougars 4-0, Advance to Semifinals

(Las Cruces, N.M.) - Fourth-seeded Kansas City men's tennis coasted to a 4-0 victory on Friday afternoon in the WAC Championships, taking out No. 5 Chicago State and advancing to the semifinals on Saturday morning.
UMKC (8-14) jumped out early with the doubles point after snagging an 8-3 victory at the No. 3 spot by Uldis Gaismins and Andrey Smirnov, followed by an 8-6 clinching win at No. 2 from Conner Edwards and Vinh Pham.
The 'Roos got little resistance in singles play from the Cougars (5-22), taking three straight-set victories at No. 5, No. 2, and No. 1 in that order. Gaismins kicked it off with his second win of the day, as did Smirnov. The 'Roos got the clinching point from senior Tomas Patino.
Kansas City will have to play earlier than anticipated in the semifinals on Saturday at there are high wind advisories in the afternoon. The 'Roos will face top-seed and host New Mexico State at 8:30 a.m. CT.
