Benoit Breaks School Record, Williams Wins 100 Meter Hurdles At Tulsa Duels

(Kansas City, Mo.) – The Kansas City track and field team opened up the outdoor season on Friday and Saturday, making their annual trip to the Tulsa Duels at Hurricane Stadium in Tulsa, Okla.
Senior Shanelle Williams paced the 'Roos scoring 15 points in the event after finishing first in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.04 and sixth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.24.
Sophomore Kelsey Benoit, meanwhile, finished second in the shot put, breaking the UMKC record with a toss of 13.68 meters (44-10.6), while adding a fourth place finish in the hammer throw (47.40m) and a 10th place finish in the discus throw (36.93) for a total of 14 points.
Freshmen Mallory Short and Sarah Fogarty each added third place finishes with Short earning six points with a time of 15.04 in the 100 meter hurdles and Fogarty scoring six points with a time of 7:20.65 in the 2,000 meter steeple chase.
Adding fourth place finishes and five points apiece for the 'Roos were senior Angel Gannon in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:20.58 and freshman Gabrielle Penaflor in the 2,000 meter steeple chase with a time of 7:23.02, while Sydia Darker also claimed a fourth place result with a personal best time of 15.04 in the 100 meter hurdles.
Others scoring points on the women's side included Lynette Cottingham (13th-100 meter dash-12.57- 1 pt.), Janell Johnson (7th-800 meter run-2:25.52-3 pts.), Dasjah Mason (7th-long jump-5.13m-1.5 pts.), Jasmine Carter (6th-triple jump-10.35m-3 pts.), Dahlia Dyson (8th-shot put-13.00m-3 pts. & 9th-discus throw-40.07m-2 pts. & 5th-hammer throw-46.61m 4 pts.), Rebecca Hasenkamp (7th-javelin-33.79-3 pts.) and Meg Sharemet (10th-javelin-28.09-2 pts.).
On the men's side, the throwers led the way for the Blue & Gold, combining for 29 points. Freshman Martin Williams notched 12 of the points, scoring a third place finish in the discus throw (43.19m), a fifth place finish in the hammer throw (49.89m) and seventh in the shot put (13.19m), while sophomore Blake Hocking added 11 points with a third place result in the shot put (15.73m) and a fourth place finish in the discus throw (42.10m). Kris Leverette, meanwhile, added the final four points with a third place finish in the hammer throw with a personal best toss of 54.25m.
Freshman Bryce Miller added six points to the team's total coming in third in the 2,000 meter steeple chase with a time of 6:02.92, while junior Daniel Prioleau (100 meter dash-10.75), sophomore Brady Adams (200 meter dash-21.78) and freshman Joshua Schirmer (110 meter hurdles-15.28) all scored five points with fourth place results.
Others scoring points for the 'Roos on the men's side included Adams (6th-100 meter dash-10.81-3 pts.), Prioleau (6th-200 meter dash-22.08-3 pts.), sophomore Zak Snow (5th-400 meter dash-50.66- 4 pts.), sophomore Terrone Garner (7th-400 meter dash-50.93-2 pts.), junior Griffin Humphreys (8th-2,000 meter steeple chase-6:23.89- 3 pts.), sophomore Eric Carter (7th-long jump-6.45m-2 pts.) and senior Joshua Harden (6th-triple jump-13.61m-3 pts.).
The 'Roos will be back in action next week when they head east to West Lafayette, Ind., when they take part in the Mike Poehlein invitational hosted by Purdue on Mar. 28-29.
