(Cheney, Wash.) - The UMKC men's tennis squad started the weekend on the right foot when it took down Eastern Washington in a tough 4-3 dual Friday on the road.
Kansas City (2-6) snapped its six-match skid with the win, and it came with some huge drama in doubles play. After the 'Roos took an 8-4 win at the No. 2 spot, it came down to tiebreakers at No. 1 and 3 to decide the point. UMKC fell 7-4 in the No. 3 tiebreak, but the duo of Tomas Patino and Mike Psarros came through with a 7-5 winner at No. 1 to take the 1-0 lead.
In singles play, EWU tried to mount a comeback with a straight set win at No. 1, but UMKC came right back with a win at No. 4 from Vinh Pham. Andrey Smirnov secured another point with a three-set win at No. 3, before Patino came through again to clinch the match, coming back from a set down to win at No. 2. With the match already clinched, EWU won the No. 5 and No. 6 spots.
The 'Roos will face a stiffer opponent in WAC rival Idaho on Saturday evening in Spokane, Wash.
