Track and Field Finishes Opener at Bob Timmons Challenge

BOB TIMMONS CHALLENGE
(Lawrence, Kan.)-- On Saturday the Kansas City track and field opened its 2014-15 indoor season at the Bob Timmons Challenge inside KU's pavilion. Both of the women and men finished third overall out of the seven teams that competed for the women and the six teams on the men's side.
The morning started off with the freshman from St. Louis, Mo., Genel Rollins finishing sxith place in the women's 60m dash with a time of 7.89 seconds, immediately followed by sophomore Kamaya Tucker recording a split of 7.94 seconds.
On the men's side, Kenny Roach finished second place with his split of 6.93 seconds followed by Andre Jones (6.99) and Daniel Prioleau (7.04).
In the 60m hurdles, Mallory Short led the way for the 'Roos recording a split of 9.08 seconds, placing her fourth overall in the event. Following her was Sydia Darker, running a 9.29 seconds granting her fifth place.
Joshua Schirmer and Devin Felton were able to score some points in their races as each came in third (8.71) and fifth (9.17) place, respectively, in the men's 60m hurdles.
The 400m dash had the senior Briana Carter representing the women's team well, coming in second place with her split of 57.45 seconds, immediately followed by Chantel Bethune (58.43) and Veronica Rollins (58.84).
While on the men's side, Zak Snow's time of 52.11 seconds in the men's 400m earned him third place in the men's 400m dash.
Gaining some more distance, for the women's 600yd run, Janelle Johnson was able to score points for UMKC as she placed fourth with a record at 1:29.62 minutes.
Next, came the women's 200m dash in which Mallory Short was the only one able to score with her eighth place finish in 27.68 seconds. For the men's 200m dash, Terrone Garner ran a 22.82 split in the earning him third place shadowed by Eric Yarbrough recording 23.34 seconds with a fifth place finish.
The women's 4x400 meter relay had great success, as they were able to finish first clocking in with 3:53.72 minutes including Chantel Bethune, Kamaya Tucker, Veronica Rollins, and Briana Carter. The men's team was able to score eighth place recording a final time of 3:35.23 in the 4x400 which included Devin Burton, Kenny Roach, Joshua Harden, and Jeremy Harr.
In the throwers ring, Blake Hocking earned first place tossing the shot put 16.19m while Jacob Hockman and Mitch Gaylord earned themselves sixth and eighth place with a toss of 12.33m and 11.88m, respectively.. As on the women's side, junior Kelsey Benoit finished second with a toss of 13.74m and a fourth place finish by Dahlia Dyson tossing 12.00m.
For the women's weight throw, Dahlia Dyson represented the 'Roos with her second place finish with a throw of 16.26m. Following was Kelsey Beniot with her mark of 15.72m. For the men's weight throw, the senior from Lawrence, Kan., Martin Williams came in second with his final throw of 15.15m. Following respectively was Blake Hocking (14.75m) and Jacob Hockman (13.08).
Briana Carter earned first place in the women's triple jump with a leap of 11.83m. Freshman, Traci Mills finished fourth while Kyle Conrow finished seventh. In the women's long jump with Traci Mills took second with her mark of 5.55m, with junior Sydia Darker following in fourth and freshman Blessing Oparaji in eighth. The Lee's Summit, Mo. native and junior Eric Carter also earned himself a first place finish in the men's long jump with a mark of 6.47m. Shadowing him was Garrison Woods in fourth, Jeremy Harr in fifth, and Zane Lockhart in seventh.
For the women's high jump, the freshman from Bolivar, Mo., Daiwa Emmert made her final jump at 1.55m, granting her a fifth place finish.
The Kangaroos will return to action Friday, Dec. 12 at the Hoosier Open hosted by Indiana University with the starting gun set to go off at approximately 5:00 p.m.
